You’ve made it to the recipe for the best mashed potatoes that you’ve ever eaten. This recipe is another one of my experiments and you will see why. I thought about all the things that I would love in mashed potatoes, plopped it into the mix and what I was left with was a dish your friends and family will love. I make these all year round, but they’re always a hit during the holidays.
Mashed potatoes are typically made with butter, milk, salt, and pepper, then whipped into oblivion, not these. I try to stay away from the mixer, only because I like my mashed potatoes not only creamy, but slightly lumpy, while still maintaining some of their potato consistency. If you mix them too much, they can become a starchy mess that tastes great, but the texture might be a little off. So, for this recipe, I highly suggest a masher rather than a mixer.
These potatoes pair well with Steak, Chicken, or simply stand alone. They are a very versatile dish, not only this, but if you find yourself with leftovers you can even turn them into Gnocchi.
The Best Mashed Potato Ingredients
- Yukon Gold Potatoes: These are typically my potato choice for mashed potatoes. Russet Potatoes are a good alternative.
- Garlic: Finely minced so the garlic so all the flavor will blend into the potatoes.
- Heavy Cream: You can use milk, but I prefer heavy cream.
- Sour Cream: This delivers that creamy tang to the dish and pairs with the seasonings.
- Montreal Steak Seasoning: This is the first special ingredient. There’s so much flavor in this seasoning and it works well in this dish.
- Smoked Gouda: This is the one ingredient to rule them all. I add just enough to add to the flavor but not enough to mess with the consistency of the potatoes.
