You’ve made it to the recipe for the best mashed potatoes that you’ve ever eaten. This recipe is another one of my experiments and you will see why. I thought about all the things that I would love in mashed potatoes, plopped it into the mix and what I was left with was a dish your friends and family will love. I make these all year round, but they’re always a hit during the holidays.

Mashed potatoes are typically made with butter, milk, salt, and pepper, then whipped into oblivion, not these. I try to stay away from the mixer, only because I like my mashed potatoes not only creamy, but slightly lumpy, while still maintaining some of their potato consistency. If you mix them too much, they can become a starchy mess that tastes great, but the texture might be a little off. So, for this recipe, I highly suggest a masher rather than a mixer.

These potatoes pair well with Steak, Chicken, or simply stand alone. They are a very versatile dish, not only this, but if you find yourself with leftovers you can even turn them into Gnocchi.

Ingredients for the best mashed potatoes.

The Best Mashed Potato Ingredients

  • Yukon Gold Potatoes: These are typically my potato choice for mashed potatoes. Russet Potatoes are a good alternative.
  • Garlic: Finely minced so the garlic so all the flavor will blend into the potatoes.
  • Heavy Cream: You can use milk, but I prefer heavy cream.
  • Sour Cream: This delivers that creamy tang to the dish and pairs with the seasonings.
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning: This is the first special ingredient. There’s so much flavor in this seasoning and it works well in this dish.
  • Smoked Gouda: This is the one ingredient to rule them all. I add just enough to add to the flavor but not enough to mess with the consistency of the potatoes.
